As a young production intern and production assistant, I joined ILMCP in the mid 1990s. After a few years, I crossed over into the ILM Feature division where I worked on films such as Lost World Jurassic Park, Men In Black, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, The Green Mile and Space Cowboys. Fifteen years later, standing on the Main Stage at 32TEN during a benefit, I was almost overwhelmed with the pride and affection I felt for all the artists, model makers and craftsmen and women among whom I stood. Someone said the turn of the century would soon be regarded as a "second golden age" of innovation for visual effects. This Age of Innovation for the visual effects professional community is far from over. My pride is not born of nostalgia, but rather from being counted among some of the most creative and brilliant minds and artists that the world will ever see.
Since spending my formative years at ILM, I have continued to build a long career in visual effects and digital production. Those skills, along with an absence of fear of the unknown that I learned at ILM, have influenced greatly the ideals and values on which I have co-founded my new full-service production studio called Mr. Smith located in Oakland, California. Our office is a shared work building comprised of inspirational artists who are masters of their craft and have a passion for what they do.
